Upcoming autumn workshops

Tickets: £3.50 per child (one free adult ticket per child).

Thursday 25 September, Our Musical World

1.15pm – 2pm | home educated children aged 5 – 7 years old

Discover how to make a talking drum ‘speak’, play a ceremonial drum for a Lunar New Year lion dance and try playing North Indian drums.

This session begins with an interactive story exploring the music and some of the instruments of Nigeria, China and India. Children will then have the chance to play a wonderful selection of world instruments, whilst exploring clothing, masks or puppets from each country.

This session includes private access to the Horniman’s fantastic Hands on Music space.

Thursday 23 October, Sound Around the World

2.45pm – 3.45pm | home educated children aged 12 – 16 years old

Go on a journey around the world as you explore the science of sound whilst playing traditional instruments from West Africa, northern India and Trinidad in this exciting hands-on workshop.

Discover why squeezing the strings of a West African talking drum changes its pitch; learn to speak and play Indian bols on traditional drums; and consider why some Trinidadian instruments are made of unusual materials.

In this session, leaners will follow a conductor to learn and perform rhythms from each of the three world regions. The workshop culminates in a group performance of a Trinidadian Calypso.

Thursday 27 November, Prehistoric Britain

1.15pm – 2.15pm | home educated children aged 8 – 11 years old

What was it like to live in Prehistoric Britain and how can we know?

Become an archaeologist, handle artefacts from the Stone and Bronze Ages and use them to work out the differences between life in the Palaeolithic and Neolithic. Hold a 300,000 year old hand axe, examine a real mammoth tooth, and learn about flint knapping. Explore different animal skulls and plants to find out how people got their food in Prehistoric Britain and how this changed over time.
